Engaging Families – Hybrid

In this training we examine and apply the Six Principles of Partnership, discuss the importance of effective engagement to develop a trusting relationship with the families with whom we work, and explore how our judgements and biases impact the helper-authority continuum in our work with families.

Who should or can attend?

The target audience for this training is child welfare professionals and supervisors who will not be completing the WiLearn Program, including youth justice professionals, child welfare support staff, tribal child welfare professionals, foster and kinship care coordinators, etc.

Do not register for this course if you are currently enrolled in or have completed the WiLearn Program, Engaging to Build Trusting Relationships training, or Supporting Change Through Engagement training.

This course is not a substitute for CPS Access, Initial Assessment, and Ongoing Services professionals who are required to complete Engaging to Build Trusting Relationships and Supporting Change Through Engagement foundation training to meet their DCF 43 training requirements.

Format and Structure

Engaging Families – Hybrid is a four-week blended learning course that utilizes a mix of three Community Huddles attended via Zoom and self-paced online packets and activities accessed in PDS Online. The training requires the completion of pre-work prior to each Community Huddle. You will receive an email one week prior to your session’s first Community Huddle with information about the pre-work to be completed.

Time Commitment and Schedule Overview

The total time commitment is 10.5 hours over the course’s 4 weeks, which includes attending the Community Huddles via Zoom and completing self-paced online packets and activities.

Community Huddles via Zoom: There are three required Community Huddles, totaling 5.3 hours.

Self-paced online packets and activities: These activities comprise an estimated 5.2 hours.

Before you register in PDS Online for one of the training sessions, please (1) review the Schedule Overview below and (2) look at the dates in PDS Online that each Community Huddle will be held for the training session you are interested in attending. Choose a session of the training that will allow you to attend all three Community Huddles and afford you time to complete the self-paced online packets and activities between Community Huddles.

  2. Community Huddle 1 – virtual session via Zoom (90 minutes)
  3. Packet 1: Everyone Needs to be Heard – self-paced online packet and activity (45 minutes)
  4. Packet 2: Everyone Desires Respect – self-paced online packet and activity (40 minutes)
  5. Packet 3: Everyone has Strengths – self-paced online packet and activity (30 minutes)
  6. Community Huddle 2 – virtual session via Zoom (120 minutes)
  7. Packet 4: Judgments Can Wait – self-paced online packet and activity (45 minutes)
  8. Packet 5: Partners Share Power – self-paced online packet and activity (20 minutes)
  9. Packet 6: Partnership is a Process – self-paced online packet and activity (20 minutes)
  10. Culminating Activity – self-paced online packet and activity (30 minutes)
  11. Independent Study – self-paced online packet and activity (50 minutes)
  12. Community Huddle 3 – virtual session via Zoom (110 minutes)

How do I register for the course?

Note: Engaging Families – Hybrid will be offered on a quarterly basis. If you do not see any available sessions in PDS Online, the sessions you see are full, or you cannot attend all Community Huddles in the currently available sessions, click on the “Notify Me” button to be notified when additional sessions are added to PDS Online.

What do I do once I am registered for one of the sessions in PDS Online?

  1. Put all the Community Huddle dates and times into your calendar – you will find the dates and times in the course posting in PDS Online and in the confirmation email you will receive following your PDS Online course registration.
  2. Block off sufficient time in your calendar before each Community Huddle to complete the self-paced online packets and activities in the Pre-Work and Packets that are listed in the Schedule Overview below.
  3. Review and print the course Workbook.
  4. Download and complete the VILT Participant Checklist to prepare.
  5. Look for an email one week prior to your first Community Huddle with information about (a) how to complete the Prework for Community Huddle 1, (b) the Zoom link for your Community Huddles, and (c) additional course information.
